The city of Christ the Redeemer
Maratea extends for about 32 km on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its coast is situated and nestled in a unique geographical position, and varied with coves and caves, rocks and shoals. It has numerous and characteristic coastal beaches, in front of one of which emerges the island of Santo Janni.
Also worthy of attention are the seabeds and the 131 marine and terrestrial caves, some of which have returned fossils and prehistoric artefacts.
The Grotte di Marina stands out with its stalactites and stalagmites. In addition, the hinterland mountains with their coasts, create a strong picturesque view and visual glimps of sea and mountains.
The Statue of the Redeemer is located on the highest peak of Mount San Biagio, overlooking the historic centre of Maratea. It was completed in 1965 by the Florentine sculptor Bruno Innocenti, based on Stefano Rivetti’s idea. It’s a concrete dough mixed with Carrara marble, and about 22 metres heigh, and the tallest statue in Italy and the sixty-sixth tallest in the world, as well as the most famous monument of Maratea. It depicts Christ the Redeemer, after the Resurrection, in an iconography very far from the traditional one. In addition, a particular optical effect means that when observing it from a distance it seems to look at the sea, instead it has its gaze turned towards the mountains of Lucania.
Maratea is considered one of the most typical tourist destinations of Italian holidays and is able to offer unique naturalistic attractions.
Fiumicello beach is one of the most renowned and popular on the coast of Maratea. It is divided into two streches by the Fiumicello stream, which runs along the Maratea valley. Along the southern part the Santavenere tower overlooks some suggestive rocks.
A characteristic beach located in the resort called Marina di Maratea. This beach is reminiscent of the volcanic beaches that can be found in Polynesia, precisely in Tahiti. Sea lovers should definitely pay a visit to this place, to try an exceptional swimming experience.
The caves of Wonders (Grotte delle Meraviglie) are located in Marina di Maratea, a few kilometres away from the town of Maratea. Inside the caves it is possible to admire huge rocky structures such as stalactites and stalagmites.
