History and Tradition

Tortora is the first municipality in northwestern part of Calabria overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, and it borders with Basilicata. A large part of its predominantly hilly territory is included in the Pollino National Park.

The territory of Tortora has seen the presence of man since the dawn of human history. An open-air prehistoric fossil site dating back to the Upper Palaeolithic dated about one hundred and fifty thousand years ago was found in the Rosaneto locality. It is one of the oldest Italian prehistoric sites

Historic and Bathing Centre

Tortora is not just the sea. In the Historic Centre you can visit buildings with ancient portals, monasteries and ancient churches as well as a modern and avant-garde museum with important artefacts from the ancient community of enotri of Blanda

In this Archeological Museum are collected the finds from the necropolis excavations of San Brancato of the ancient Italian city of Blanda, Tortora’s old name.

The Mother Church

The Mother Church, built in the 14th century, is dedicated to the Apostle St. Peter .The interior houses sacred objects, various statues and frescos and canvases of remarkable workmanship.

Archeological Excavations

The origin of the settlement of the Enotri on the Palècastro hill dates back to the middle of the sixth century BC. Their presence in the territory has been ascertained by the discovery of 38 tombs with enotrian funerary objects, from a lithic stele, as well as from the original nucleus of the town.
